  Implementing Bird Activities in an Educational Setting

Below is a list of activities carried out by educators participating in Citizen Science projects. Email us at schoolyard@cornell.edu to share your ideas.

  • Students create a classification poster of birds seen in the schoolyard by classifying each bird into Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.

  • Create a Taxonomic Key for common birds visiting schoolyard. Example: If the bird has a crest, go to line 2. If bird does not have a crest, go to line 3.

  • Build bird feeders and bird houses and discuss where to put them up. Examples

  • Dissect owl pellets

  • Decorate your school yard with tasty treats for the birds. Examples and Recipes

  • Print the online coloring book and have kids color the birds using field guides or posters
     
  • Take a bird walk and talk about habitat
  • Find a pigeon flock and count the number and colors of pigeons
  • Make bird identification flash cards. Each students can be an expert of one particular species.
  • Set up your feeder area with your students.
  • Pair up younger children and older children as “birding buddies".
